Red rice is a special variety of rice in which the rice grains are red in color. The demand for this paddy variety is increasing day by day. This rice is red in color from a substance called anthocyanin and contains nutrients like fiber, iron, magnesium, vitamin B6, and vitamin E.


Health Benefits of Red Rice

  • Aids in digestion : The amount of fiber in red rice helps in digestion.
  • Helps in weight control : It contains a rich amount of fiber and protein, which helps in weight loss.
  • Control of blood sugar : It has a low glycemic index, due to which blood sugar can be controlled.
  • Maintaining heart health : It has nutrients like magnesium, fiber, and vitamin E, which help in heart health.


Red rice cultivation methods

Seed Selection : Choose high-quality red rice seeds from reliable sources. Select disease-resistant seeds appropriate for your specific climate and soil conditions.


Sowing : Sow red rice seeds in rows at appropriate distances. The recommended distance is usually 20-25 cm between rows and 10-15 cm between plants.

  • Irrigation : Red rice requires adequate water for best growth. Maintain consistent moisture in the soil during the growing period, especially during the early stages. Avoid overwatering to prevent fungal diseases.
  • Weed control : Remove weeds regularly to reduce competition for nutrients and space. Weeds can be effectively controlled by hand weeding or using appropriate herbicides.
  • Fertilizer : Add organic or balanced chemical fertilizers to provide essential nutrients to the plants. Red rice generally requires nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium for healthy growth.
  • Pest and disease management :Monitor for common pests such as rice stem borer, leaf curler, and diseases such as blast and bacterial leaf blight. Take preventive measures and use appropriate pesticides when necessary.
  • Harvesting : Harvest red rice when the grains are fully ripe and turn red. Cut the bunches, thresh them, and separate the grains from the chaff. 24 to 26 quintals of grains are produced per acre.

  • Price of red rice

    The price of red rice may vary in different markets. It can usually go up to around Rs 250 per kg. It depends on suitability, area, and quality.
