Water Saving Strategy:

Transplanting rice close to the onset of monsoon reduces underground water usage. Development of short duration rice varieties that do not show yield decline when transplanted late.

Varieties and Agronomic Practices:

PAU recommended 11 short/medium duration rice varieties, covering over 70% of the state's area.Transplanting around June 25 yields the highest results; PR 126 performs well even in July.

Temperature and Pest Issues:

Early transplanted crops face high temperatures, leading to panicle sterility and low grain weight. Southern Black Streaked Dwarf Virus was noticed in 2022; vigilance is necessary.

Insect Surveillance:

Farmers should monitor for white backed plant hoppers from nursery sowing. Use light traps for insect surveillance and recommended insecticides if needed.

Pest Buildup Concerns:

Early transplanting leads to more generations of pests, particularly stem borers and plant hoppers. Heavy pest buildup threatens basmati crops and can affect subsequent wheat crops.

Disease Management:

Higher severity of false smut and sheath blight diseases in early transplanted rice.

Fertilizer Recommendations:

Apply 90 kg urea per acre and appropriate amounts of Zinc sulphate. Avoid excessive and untimely fertilizer use; green manuring is advised for soil improvement.
