Causes of Khaira disease

Zinc deficiency in the soil: This disease occurs when the amount of zinc in the soil decreases. Zinc is an essential micronutrient required for the growth and development of plants. High pH of the soil: If the pH of the soil is high, it can affect the availability of zinc. Excessive irrigation and waterlogging: Excessive irrigation and waterlogging can cause zinc deficiency in the soil, which increases the chances of Khaira disease. Excessive use of nitrogen:Excessive use of nitrogen fertilizers can also affect the availability of zinc.

Symptoms

Yellow spots on leaves: Small yellow spots appear on the leaves of diseased plants, which later turn brown. Drying of leaves: As the disease progresses, the leaves start drying and there is a lack of moisture in them. Slow growth of plants: Due to zinc deficiency, the growth of plants slows down and their height decreases. Weakening of root system: The root system becomes weak, due to which the plants are unable to absorb the necessary nutrients.

Effects

Reduction in production: Due to Khaira disease, the production of paddy crop decreases, causing economic loss to the farmers. Reduction in quality: The quality of the diseased crop is also affected, which reduces its price in the market. Death of plants: If not treated on time, plants may also die.

Management and prevention

Use of zinc fertilizers: Zinc fertilizers should be used to meet the zinc deficiency in the soil. Zinc sulphate is a major zinc fertilizer that can be used in paddy crop. Soil Testing: Get the soil tested regularly to detect zinc deficiency and take appropriate measures in time. Balanced Fertilizer Use: Use zinc in a balanced manner along with nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium so that all the essential nutrients are available in the soil. Irrigation Management: Avoid excessive irrigation and waterlogging to maintain zinc availability in the soil. Organic Farming:Adopt organic farming methods to improve soil structure and nutrient availability.
