This year, maize will be sown in about 2.5 lakh hectares of area in Chhindwara district in MP. The average productivity of maize here was 40 quintals per hectare till last three years, while in last three years, by changing the sowing technique of maize and sowing it using raised-bed (ridge drain technique) and table planter, the production has increased. With the use of hybrid seeds, advanced technology and integrated fertilizers, the average productivity of maize has increased from 45 to 50 quintals per hectare

Advantages of sowing using raised-bed technique and table planter

  • Seeds are saved. When sowing is done using this technique, less seeds (5-6 kg per acre) are required as compared to normal sowing (7-8 kg per acre), which also reduces the cost.
  • In case of heavy rainfall, the water flows out of the drain and the crop remains safe on the ridge.
  • When less rainfall occurs, the water that collects in the drain is used by the crop, which keeps the crop safe.
  • Due to more distance between rows, the plants grow well and more yield is obtained.

Chhindwara tops in maize production

About 15 to 16 lakh metric tons of maize is produced every year in Sirmaur Chhindwara. An ethanol plant is operational in Borgaon Saunsar in the district, which consumes about 15 lakh metric tons of maize. This plant gets maize supply from Chhindwara, Betul, Seoni, Maharashtra and Telangana. Two ethanol units are also under construction in the district, whose start will increase the consumption of maize and farmers are likely to get good prices.
