Indian Agricultural Research Institute, Pusa, Delhi (IARI) has developed three new disease resistant varieties of Basmati rice for paddy farmers: Pusa Basmati 1847, Pusa Basmati 1885 and Pusa Basmati 1886. These varieties are resistant to bacterial blight and blast disease, which will enable farmers to get better yields and more earnings.


Pusa Basmati 1847:

  • This variety has been created by improving the popular 1509 variety of paddy.
  • It contains genes to fight bacterial blight and blast disease.
  • It is an early maturing and semi-dwarf variety, which is ready in 125 days.
  • Average yield potential is 22 to 23 quintals per acre.


Pusa Basmati 1885:

  • It is an improved form of Pusa Basmati 1121 variety.
  • It also has the ability to fight bacterial blight and blast disease.
  • It becomes ripe in 135 days.
  • Average yield potential is 18.72 quintals per acre.


Pusa Basmati 1886:

  • This is an improved form of Pusa Basmati 6.
  • This variety is also resistant to bacterial blight and blast disease.
  • It becomes ripe in 145 days.
  • Average yield potential is 18 quintals per acre.


Farmers can get seeds of these varieties from the seed centers of Basmati Export Development Foundation (BEDF) Meerut and IARI Delhi.


So far, 45 varieties of Basmati rice have been notified under the Seeds Act, 1966, which include major varieties: Basmati 217, Punjab Basmati 1, Basmati 386, Haryana Basmati 1, Type 3, Pant Basmati 1, Pusa Basmati 1, Pusa Basmati 1121, Pusa Basmati 1509, and Pusa Basmati 6.
