The area under Basmati cultivation increased by 12.58% due to crop diversification drive in Punjab. Basmati is now being cultivated in 6.71 lakh hectares as against 5.96 lakh hectares last year. Amritsar is the leading district in Basmati cultivation, with 1.46 lakh hectares under Basmati cultivation. Basmati is cultivated in 1.10 lakh hectares in Muktsar, 84.9 thousand hectares in Fazilka, 72.5 thousand hectares in Tarn Taran and 49.8 thousand hectares in Sangrur. The state government has banned the use of 10 pesticides to enhance the quality of Basmati. The area under cultivation through water-saving DSR method has increased from 1.72 lakh acres to 2.52 lakh acres.
