The central government is trying to increase maize production for ethanol production. For this, the Indian Institute of Maize Research (IIMR) has been given a big responsibility. A project called 'Increasing maize production in the catchment area of ethanol industries' has been started. The government aims to achieve 20% ethanol blending in petrol by 2025-26. Ethanol is produced from sugarcane, maize, and harvested rice, but maize consumes less water. Therefore, special emphasis is being laid on the use of maize for ethanol production. Efforts are being made to increase the productivity of maize with new technologies and varieties. IIMR is working to increase maize production in 78 districts of 15 states. The Ministry of Agriculture has set a target of increasing maize production by 1 crore tonnes in the next five years. According to IIMR scientist Dr SL Jaat, technologies for producing ethanol from maize are available and are being further improved in the Indian context.
