Scientists of Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology have developed a new opium variety 'Chetak'. Chetak opium is suitable for the farmers of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh. This variety produces more morphine and poppy seeds. From opium cultivation, farmers can get an average of 58 kg opium and 6.84 kg morphine per hectare. Its flowers are white in color and they should be cut in 100-105 days. Chetak opium cultivation will increase the economic benefits of farmers, especially in Chittorgarh, Pratapgarh, Udaipur, Bhilwara, Kota, Banaras, and Jhalawar districts of Rajasthan. It is being cultivated on the basis of leases issued to farmers by the Central Narcotics Bureau of the Government of India.
