Potato is cultivated on a large scale in Shahjahanpur district, and farmers are achieving good production. Some farmers also export potatoes abroad. The Horticulture Department provides improved variety of seeds on subsidy. District Horticulture Officer Puneet Kumar Pathak said that potato is cultivated on 15,000 hectares of land in the district, which produces 5.5 lakh tonnes of potatoes. The district has a potato storage capacity of 2.5 lakh tonnes. Farmers can submit demand letters to the department for high quality seeds. The process of obtaining seeds is simple; farmers submit demand letters by mentioning the variety and quantity of seeds. The seeds demanded are sent to the government, so that farmers can get seeds as per their need. Seeds are made available on subsidy, which reduces the cost of farmers. Farmers need documents like Khatauni and Aadhar Card to get seeds. This initiative is helping farmers to grow better potato crop and increase income.
