The population in the country is increasing and with it the agricultural land is decreasing. This is the biggest challenge for agricultural scientists. An initiative has been started in Kulgam in South Kashmir, so that farming can be done in less space. Zahoor Ahmed Rishi grew paddy crop on the rooftop of his house through vertical farming and increased the production four times. Vertical farming is a modern farming technique in which crops are grown on wooden blocks. With this technique, more production can be achieved in less space. According to Dr. Kausar Muqeem, this type of technology can lead to higher production despite shortage of land. Agricultural scientists of Kulgam in South Kashmir are working to grow two crops of Shali in a year. This technology is helpful in producing expensive varieties of rice.
