The virus was found in Rupnagar, Mohali, Patiala, Fatehgarh Sahib and adjoining areas. Scientists at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana received several reports of dwarf paddy plants from these districts. The causes of dwarfing of plants include zinc, micronutrient deficiencies and SRBSDV. The virus was found in 14% of the samples collected by PAU. The virus was first detected in the country in 2022 and is attacking the crop in Punjab for the second time. The virus is spread by white-backed plant hoppers and can affect any variety of paddy. The infected plants remain dwarf, their leaves are narrow and straight and the roots are also affected. The scientists advised farmers to uproot the infected plants so that the virus does not spread to other plants. Scientists collected over 100 samples, of which 14% were found to be infected with the virus. Farmers were advised to remain alert about the disease and the presence of white-backed plant hoppers.
