The Uttar Pradesh government has banned 10 pesticides to boost Basmati rice exports. The presence of these pesticide residues in rice was affecting exports. The ban is expected to improve rice quality and increase exports in line with international standards. Export of Basmati rice is an important economic activity for Uttar Pradesh. The European Union has laid down strict regulations for pesticide residues in Basmati rice. Excessive use of pesticides such as tricyclazole led to residues higher than the MRL. Exports have declined by up to 15%, especially to Europe, the US, and the Gulf countries. The banned pesticides include tricyclazole, buprofezin, and chlorpyrifos The government has taken this step following the instructions of APEDA. Farmers will need to use alternative methods or organic pesticides. This move will improve the quality of Basmati rice and help farmers and exporters to face the new challenges.
