Uttar Pradesh Sugarcane Research Institute has developed two new sugarcane varieties (Co.Sha. 18231 and Co. Lakh 16202) which are resistant to red rot disease. These varieties will provide better production to farmers and higher sugar recovery to sugar mills. Co.Sha. 18231 has given 90.16 tonnes yield per hectare and 13.06% sugar recovery. Co. Lakh 16202 has given 92.8 tonnes yield per hectare and 13.57% sugar recovery. The old sugarcane variety Co.Sha. 0238 has been banned due to being susceptible to red rot disease. Seed kits of these new sugarcane varieties will be distributed in the Mithas Mela on October 16.
