There are 17 major plant nutrients for crops: 9 macro (e.g. carbon, hydrogen, oxygen) and 8 micro (e.g. iron, zinc). Today's intensive farming system is leading to depletion of nutrients in the soil, which leads to disorders and diseases in crops. Different fertilizers have to be used to meet the nutrient deficiencies of plants. Chemical compatibility is important when mixing fertilizers. There are three main types of fertilizer compatibility: chemical, critical relative humidity, and physical compatibility. Solubility of fertilizer is important, as insoluble compounds may arise. Urea can be mixed with most fertilizers, but must be sprayed immediately. Calcium nitrate and ammonium sulfate should not be mixed together. Mixing sulfate fertilizers with calcium fertilizers produces gypsum, which is less soluble. Calcium nitrate and magnesium sulphate should not be mixed together. It is necessary to consider the mixing compatibility of fertilizer materials.
