Wheat is the main crop grown in India, which is rich in protein and carbohydrates. However, some dangerous diseases affect the production of wheat crop. Let us know the symptoms of major diseases in wheat crop and their management.
Brown rust disease
Symptoms:
This disease appears on the lower leaves of wheat, which are orange and brown in color. It appears on both the upper and lower surfaces of the leaves. Over time, the effect of the disease increases.
Management:
- Do not grow the same variety in a large area.
- Spray 0.1% solution of Propiconazole 25 EC (Tilt) or Tebuconazole 25 EC.
- Spray again at an interval of 10-15 days.
Black rust disease
Symptoms:
This disease occurs in the form of brown spots on the stems of wheat. This weakens the stems, and as the infection increases, the wheat grains become small and membranous, which reduces the yield.
Management:
- Do not plant the same variety in a large area.
- Spray 0.1% solution of propiconazole 25 EC (Tilt) or tebuconazole 25 EC.
- To prevent the spread of the disease, spray again after 10-15 days.
Yellow rust disease
h5> Symptoms:
In this disease, yellow stripes appear on the leaves. On touching the leaves, yellow powder sticks to the hands, which is the main symptom of this disease.
Management:
- Choose varieties resistant to yellow rust disease.
- Spray 0.1% solution of propiconazole 25 EC (Tilt) or tebuconazole 25 EC.
- Monitor the fields from time to time, especially wheat crop near trees.
Termites
Symptoms:
Termites are small, wingless and white/yellow in colour, which damage the plants by eating their roots and seeds. The affected plants appear gnawed.
Management:
-
- Spread cow dung in the field and destroy the crop residue.
- Apply neem kheri and use chlorpyrifas 20% EC during irrigation.
Aphids
Symptoms:
Aphids are small sucking insects that suck the juice from leaves and ears and secrete honeydew, which can lead to black fungus outbreak.
Management:
- Get the field ploughed deep.
- Use pheromone traps.
- When the number of pests increases, spray Quinalphos 25% EC at the rate of 400 ml per hectare.
By identifying and managing these diseases at the right time, the wheat crop can be protected and the yield can be increased.
