Farmers of Kannauj cultivate maize on a large scale after traditional potato cultivation. Maize is cultivated twice a year: one in Zaid and the other in Kharif season.


Benefits of maize cultivation

According to the District Agriculture Officer, many varieties of maize available at government centers are very beneficial for farmers. Farmers also get subsidy on these maize, which doubles their income.


Method of sowing maize

Maize should be sown when the rains start. If means of irrigation are available, sowing can be done 10 to 15 days earlier. Seeds should be sown on the sides and top of the ridge at a depth of 3 to 5 cm. Soiling should be done one month after sowing.


Number and distance of plants

At the time of sowing, the number of plants in the field should be 55 to 80 thousand per hectare. For early maturing varieties, the distance between rows should be 60 cm and the distance between plants should be 20 cm. For late maturing varieties, the distance between rows should be 75 cm and the distance between plants should be 25 cm. For cultivating maize as a green fodder crop, the distance between rows should be 40 cm and the distance between plants should be 25 cm.


Profitable maize seeds

Seeds of Kaveri, Adventa, Trimurti companies are available at government centers. Farmers can use Pusa Jawahar Hybrid Maize-1, Pusa HM 9 Improved, Pusa HM 8 Improved, Pusa HM 4 Improved, Pusa Super Sweet Corn-1, Pusa Vivek Hybrid 27 Improved seeds, which prove to be more beneficial.


Who will get the subsidy

Farmers registered at the government procurement center and farmers who cultivate up to 2 hectares get a subsidy of up to 50% on all maize seeds. This subsidy helps in increasing the income of farmers.
