Cold wave and falling temperature can have a bad effect on the maize crop. Yellowing or purple of leaves, abnormal growth and hindrance in the grain formation process are the main problems. In such a situation, farmers have been advised to be cautious.


Advice of agricultural experts for maize crop

Do light irrigation:

Do light irrigation to keep the soil temperature stable. Make sure that there is no waterlogging.


Use of fertilizers:

  • Use NPK (19:19:19) and magnesium sulphate (1.5 kg per acre).
  • Use 30 kg urea and 10 kg sulphur at the stage of hair emergence.
  • Also use potash fertilizer (10 kg per acre).


Measures for weed control

  • Do weeding 2–3 times in the first 45 days of the crop.
  • Control weeds by spraying atrazine (1–1.5 kg per hectare).


How to control pests

Stem borer:

If small holes are seen on leaves, use 4% carbofuran.


Control of other pests:

Spray monocrotophos to control pyrilla, armyworm, and cutworm.


Irrigation tips:

  • First irrigation should be done 20-25 days after sowing.
  • Maintain moisture in the field from time to time. Rabi maize requires 4–6 irrigations.
