Kala Namak paddy is a special type of aromatic rice which is mainly grown in Siddharthnagar district of Uttar Pradesh. This paddy is famous for its distinctive aroma, taste and nutrition. It has been declared "One District One Product" (ODOP) of Siddharthnagar, which has increased its popularity and demand rapidly.

History and background

The history of cultivation of Kala Namak paddy is ancient and it is believed to be associated with the Buddha period. It has gained special importance due to its method of production and its properties. It is grown prominently in Siddharthnagar and its surrounding areas.


Cultivation and Production

1. Area of ​​Cultivation: Kala Namak paddy is mainly grown in Siddharthnagar, Gorakhpur, Basti, Kushinagar and surrounding districts of Uttar Pradesh. Apart from this, now it is also being grown in other states like Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand and Haryana. 2. Growth and Area:In the last few years, the area under cultivation of Kala Namak paddy has increased rapidly. Its area was only 2200 hectares in 2016, which increased to 70 thousand hectares in 2022 and in 2024 it is expected to exceed one lakh hectares.


Government efforts and support

Kala Namak paddy has got a boost due to the efforts of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Common Facility Center (CFC) was inaugurated in Siddharthnagar, in which grading, packing and other facilities of Kala Namak are available. Apart from this, various efforts are being made to make it internationally recognized.


Research and Development

Several research projects are going on on Kala Namak paddy. Sustainable Human Development, an organization working among the farmers of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, and International Rice Research Institute have made 15 varieties of Kala Namak available for demonstration. NBRI is also working on a research project on Kala Namak.
