In North India, papaya is planted in March-April and September-October. Currently, it is the month of September, so most of the farmers must have set up nurseries or they should put the seeds in the nursery immediately. Nursery is the place where the plants are grown before planting them in the main plots.

Importance of Nursery

Fruits like papaya require growing plants in nurseries. The quality of the seed is very important, which affects the growth and production of the plants.

Seed Sowing Process

After sowing the seeds, it should be covered with a layer of fine soil to protect it from birds or other animals. It is necessary to pay special attention to the quality of the soil and its treatment.

Selection of Nursery Site

While selecting the nursery area, the following points should be kept in mind:

  • The area should be free from waterlogging.
  • It should get adequate sunlight and should be away from shade.
  • It should be near water supply.
  • It should be safe from domestic and wild animals.

Benefits of Nursery

  • Reducing the loss of expensive seeds.
  • Proper use of land.
  • Better growth of plants and saving of time.
  • Extension of suitable time for transplantation.
  • Preparation of seedlings even in adverse conditions.

Soil treatment

Solarization of soil is preferable. Before sowing seeds, soil should be treated using formalin. Apart from this, fungicides and insecticides can also be used.

Seed quantity and planting method

500 grams of seed is sufficient in one hectare of land for papaya nursery. Seed should be treated with captan and can be sown in raised beds or in large pots. The sown beds should be covered with dry grass and watered regularly.

Transplantation

When the height of the plant becomes 25 cm and they have 4-5 leaves, then transplantation should be done in the field after about two months.
