Low cost poly tunnel technology is very beneficial for small and medium farmers. It helps in preparing high quality nursery at low cost, so that farmers can earn more profit by taking early crop.

Benefits of early farming

With this technology, vegetable nursery is prepared early, so that the main crop can be sown earlier. This gives more profit to the farmers by reaching the market early.

Useful solution in cold areas

In the cold areas of North India, germination of seeds is difficult due to low temperature of January-February. Poly tunnel solves this problem by providing a protected environment.

Structure and construction process

  • Poly tunnel is made of bamboo, iron rods or PVC pipes.
  • It is covered with transparent polyethylene sheet (20-30 micron thick), so that sunlight enters inside and keeps the temperature controlled.
  • Seeds are germinated by preparing nursery bed inside it.

Technical benefits

  • Increase in seed germination rate: Increasing the temperature by 5-7°C helps in faster germination of seeds.
  • Disease and pest management: In protected environment, the effect of fungi and other pathogens is less, which reduces the need for chemical pesticides.
  • Water conservation: Due to the maintenance of moisture, the need for irrigation is reduced, which saves water.

  • Transfer of plants to the main field

    • When the plants grow sufficiently in 30-35 days, they are transplanted to the main field in the month of February. Proper distance and proper care leads to better growth of the crop.

    Suitable crops

    • This technique can be used for many types of vegetables, such as:
    • Cucurbitaceous vegetables: Bottle gourd, bitter gourd, watermelon, muskmelon, pumpkin, cucumber.
    • Other vegetables: Brinjal, chilli, tomato etc.

    Soil preparation and care

    • Soil fertility: Mix 2 kg vermicompost, 25 g Trichoderma and 75 g NPK per square meter.
    • Seed sowing:Sow seeds in line at 2 cm depth and add light soil and straw.
    • Irrigation and disease management: Do light irrigation, avoid waterlogging and prevent diseases with biological control methods.
