Lumpy skin disease is an infectious viral disease of cattle and buffaloes caused by capripox virus. It is spread by arthropod vectors such as mosquitoes, biting flies and ticks. The disease is characterised by mild fever of 2-3 days and hard, round lumps on the skin.


Symptoms

  • Hard, round lumps on the skin (2-5 cm diameter)
  • Lesions in the mouth, pharynx and respiratory tract
  • Enlargement of lymph nodes
  • Decreased milk production
  • Abortion, infertility and sometimes death


Effects

  • Infected animals often recover in 2-3 weeks.
  • Decreased milk production for several weeks.
  • Morbidity rate: 10-20%
  • Mortality rate: 1-5%
  • Clinical monitoring and sample sending
  • Monitoring of lumpy skin lesions.
  • Send blood and skin samples to ICAR-NIHSAD, Bhopal.


Prevention and Control

  • Isolation of infected animals: Immediately separate sick animals from healthy animals.
  • Prohibition of animal markets: Control the movement of animals in infected areas.
  • Vector control: Use repellents for flies, mosquitoes etc.
  • Cleaning and disinfection: Disinfect the affected areas and vehicles with appropriate chemicals.
  • Awareness campaign: Provide information about the symptoms and effects of LSD to farmers and livestock keepers.
