In the current season, mustard is being cultivated in 88.50 lakh hectares of area in northern and central parts of India. It is the main crop in states like Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh.
The aphid insect, which is green, black and yellow in colour, attacks crops from the end of December to March. It sucks the juice of mustard leaves, flowers and pods, making the plants weak and dry.
Changing weather conditions like fog, light rain and moist conditions are favourable for the breeding of aphid. According to agricultural experts, this insect particularly damages tender flowers and pods.
Use of sticky traps is an effective and eco-friendly measure for the control of aphid pest. It is a yellow sticky sheet, which attracts the aphid pest and keeps them away from the crop.
According to agriculture expert Dr. R.P. Singh, farmers can effectively control aphid pests with simple techniques like sticky traps and periodic crop monitoring. This will reduce the use of chemicals, maintain crop quality, and provide economic benefits along with increased yield.
