In the current season, mustard is being cultivated in 88.50 lakh hectares of area in northern and central parts of India. It is the main crop in states like Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh.


The aphid insect, which is green, black and yellow in colour, attacks crops from the end of December to March. It sucks the juice of mustard leaves, flowers and pods, making the plants weak and dry.


Favourable environment for aphid

Changing weather conditions like fog, light rain and moist conditions are favourable for the breeding of aphid. According to agricultural experts, this insect particularly damages tender flowers and pods.


Sticky Trap: A chemical-free solution

Use of sticky traps is an effective and eco-friendly measure for the control of aphid pest. It is a yellow sticky sheet, which attracts the aphid pest and keeps them away from the crop.


How to use sticky traps?

  • Location and height: Place the trap at a height of 1-2 feet from the crop.
  • Number: Place 10-15 sticky traps per acre.
  • Selection of location: Place traps in areas with high pest infestation.
  • Timely change: Change traps every 20-25 days.
  • Precautions: Keep hands clean before touching the trap to maintain its effectiveness.


Other measures for aphid control

  • Removal of affected plants: Immediately pluck and destroy aphid-infested plants.
  • Neem oil: Spray of 2% neem oil is helpful in controlling aphid.
  • Spraying of medicine:Use Metasystox or other suitable insecticides on time.
  • ► Moisture control: Be alert during fog and high humidity.
