Agricultural scientists have always suggested that farmers protect their crops from weeds, as they hinder the growth of crops and affect the yield. The Agriculture Department of Bihar has told farmers some effective measures for weed control, by following which they can keep their crops safe.
Use certified and treated seeds
- Always use certified and treated seeds.
- This will reduce the effect of weeds and the quality of the crop will remain.
- Clean and pure seeds will give better production.
. Adopt mulching technique
- Do mulching to maintain soil moisture and prevent the growth of weeds.
- Use organic mulch like straw, leaves, coconut peels etc.
- This maintains the fertility of the soil and controls the spread of weeds.
Follow crop rotation
- Planting the same type of crop continuously can increase the number of weeds.
- Changing the crop rotation from time to time reduces the effect of weeds.
- This method also helps in maintaining the fertility of the soil.
Do summer plowing
- Deep plowing in the summer season destroys the seeds of weeds.
- This reduces the problem of weeds in the next crop to a great extent.
- This method is also helpful in making the soil more fertile.
Adopt mixed cropping
- The main crop can be protected from weeds by mixed cropping.
- For example, mixed cultivation of maize and pigeon pea is helpful in weed control.
- This maintains the fertility of the soil and increases crop production.
By adopting these measures, farmers can increase their crop yield and reduce losses caused by weeds.
