On the occasion of World Plastic Bag Free Day (July 3), members of village panchayat Ballo and NGO Gurbachan Singh Sewa Society gathered at the village library, where jute bags filled with jaggery were available. The elders of Ballo village had earlier called upon the residents to bring plastic and collect jaggery of the same weight. A total of 295 kg of plastic waste was collected on the occasion and jaggery of the same weight was distributed among the villagers who had collected plastic waste. Earlier this month, the village society had requested the villagers to delay paddy transplantation at least till June 25 and announced that every farmer complying with this request would be given a compensation of Rs 500 per acre. Ballo village has about 2,800 acres of agricultural land, sown with maize pickle, green fodder and cotton, and paddy transplantation in more than 1,000 acres was delayed after June 25. According to Gurmeet Singh Maan, head of Gurbachan Singh Sewa Society, and Rampura Phul SDM Narinder Singh Dhaliwal, lists are now being prepared and compensation will be distributed soon. As per the state government notification, paddy transplantation began on June 11 in six districts, including Bathinda. Last October-November, many farmers in the village were encouraged to stop burning paddy stubble and those who did so were given compensation of Rs 500 per acre by the society.
