Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann's agricultural diversification plan will be supported by Punjab's Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department through subsidies on hybrid maize seeds and maize demonstrations over 4700 hectares. Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khuddian announced a subsidy of 100 INR per kilogram for certified and recommended hybrid maize seeds from Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). The subsidy is available for a maximum of 5 acres or 40 kilograms of seed per farmer, with a total of 2300 quintals of maize seed available. Maize demonstrations will be set up on 4700 hectares, with farmers receiving 6000 INR per hectare for various inputs like fertilizers and pesticides. The state government aims to cultivate maize on a record 200,000 hectares to conserve groundwater and reduce the reliance on water-intensive paddy. Farmers are encouraged to take advantage of this scheme, and subsidies will be directly transferred to their bank accounts through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system. Interested farmers can apply for the seed subsidy on the online portal agrimachinerypb.com. Officials are instructed to closely monitor seed sales to ensure farmers receive quality seeds.
