The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has planned to develop 100 new seed varieties and 100 farm technologies in a time frame of 100 days. The initiative mainly focuses on climate-resilient and bio-fortified seed varieties. ICAR Director General Himanshu Pathak said that he will unveil these innovations after taking time from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. ICAR is developing new seed varieties in different crops including rice, wheat and horticulture. The technologies under development are related to water management, mechanisation and plant protection. ICAR has planned to set up 'seed hubs' for high-yielding oilseeds and pulses varieties, including expanding the oilseeds hub to 174 districts and the Adarsh Gram Hub for pulses seeds to 130 districts. ICAR showcased 40 innovative technologies developed in 2023 and plans to sign 10 MoUs for commercialisation of these innovations. The inaugural ceremony will be organised by Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on July 16 to mark the 96th foundation day of ICAR. ICAR has prepared a 5-year strategy for scientists working on new products and technologies in the long term. Progress is being monitored at both institutional and headquarters levels, ensuring a sustained focus on agricultural innovation and development.
