False smut is a fungal disease affecting rice crop, mainly on panicle of the crop. The disease produces green to greenish-brown spore clusters called false smut balls. The fungal infection occurs during flowering of the crop, when high humidity helps it to grow. The disease does not spread from infected grain to healthy grain. Surveys conducted by scientists of Punjab Agricultural University have found false smut in high-yielding varieties, but its severity is low. The disease has been observed to be more prevalent in areas with high nitrogen fertilizer use. An integrated approach is necessary for the management of false smut. Careful water management, such as avoiding excessive irrigation, can control the development of the disease. The most critical time for the management of false smut is during the boot stage of the rice crop. It is essential to spray fungicides at right time: first spray at boot stage and second after 10 days. Use Kocide 46 DF (copper hydroxide) @ 500 gm per acre in infested areas. Avoid spraying after flowering, as it prevents unnecessary chemical use.
