The government is focusing on producing ethanol by increasing the production of maize. Farmers need to select high-yielding varieties to increase profits. The Indian Institute of Maize Research (IIMR) has developed varieties like IMH 225 and IMH 228. IMH 225 has a yield of 102.5 quintals/hectare and is moderately resistant to stem borer, pink stem borer, and fall armyworm. IMH 228 has an average yield of 105.7 quintals/hectare and is considered suitable for the states of Northeast India. IMH 224 is a rain-fed variety, which yields 70 quintals/hectare and is ready in 90 days. IIMR has developed 149 hybrid varieties so far. The central government has launched a project called 'Increasing maize production in the catchment area of ethanol industries'. Farmers, FPOs, distilleries and seed industry are being included in this project.
