Global demand for mangosteen, called the "queen of fruits", is growing rapidly. Originating from Southeast Asia, the fruit has become more popular than avocado in Western markets. Farmers in India, especially in Kerala, southern Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, are earning crores from mangosteen cultivation. A kilo of mangosteen sells for ₹500 in India, while in the US, a fruit costs around ₹500 and a kilo can go up to $50 (~₹4,000). Indian farmers are fully preparing their land for mangosteen cultivation, which is expected to yield high profits in the next 10 years. A 35-year-old mangosteen tree in Kerala yields about 350 kg of fruit per year, earning more than ₹1 lakh a day. Even trees older than 100 years produce about a tonne of fruit annually. With the growing popularity of mangosteen, India's indigenous fruit kokum is also likely to find a place in the international markets. Value-added products like powders, sauces and dips made from kokum and mangosteen are becoming a new opportunity in the global markets.
